Child Trace, a non-profit organization, is the brainchild of a group of South African parents who saw the need for the development of child identification and verification systems to help combat the Child Trafficking pandemic in South Africa. With our technical, implementing and corporate partners and sponsors, Child Trace, through our ‘Child Identification Initiative (CIDI)’, offers a technological solution contributing to the ever changing needs and demands of child protection initiatives in South Africa.
The first 20 minutes are the most critical in a missing child emergency. In the event of a child going missing, parents and/or guardians need to be able to get high quality photos and identifying and medical information about their child to law enforcement agencies in real-time.
Our solution utilizes the fastest, most accurate and non-invasive biometric identification technology on the market today; Iris Recognition Technology. This allows law enforcement, security and other authorized agents/agencies to identify lost or missing children and alert the relevant persons within SECONDS, provided the concerned child is enrolled in the database.
Of importance to Child Trace is that more than 1000 children are reported missing each year in our country and there is a need for projects to be developed that focus more on improving existing identification systems and location of minors. Working together with our law enforcement agencies, our conviction is that we can make serious inroads in our fight against crime related to children.
Child Identification Initiative (CIDI) - Child Trace, in an effort to improve the capabilities of organizations dealing with identifying and locating missing children, has formed a unique partnership with Tr8 Technologies to create and implement the Child Identification Initiative (CIDI).
Central to CIDI is a Secure, Accurate, Fast and Easy to access South African National database, which will contain general and Iris biometric details of children, contact details of their parents and/or guardians.
Through a secure digital connection, the database will be accessed, by and interfaced with law enforcement and social service agencies local and international, community safety agencies, child protection services and other relevant organizations, who, by use of an Iris Recognition camera, will be able to use the system to quickly and positively identify children, lost or missing.
Why CIDI?
- Iris recognition biometric technology positively determines the identity of an individual by capturing a high-resolution digital photograph of the individual's iris.
- The unique features contained in the iris are compared against a database and the identity of the individual determined.
- Iris recognition has been proven to have the highest biometric accuracy, with no false matches in over two million cross-comparisons, according to Biometric Product Testing Final Report.
- As children grow, their physical appearance changes but the iris of their eye does not.
- No two irises are the same! Even between “identical” twins!!
